1935 Woodhaven Metal Stamping Co., Animate Climbing Tractor with Scraper in Original Box
This early pressed steel clockwork tractor was produced by Woodhaven Metal Stamping Company, Brooklyn, NY. However, it was actually engineered and sold by the Animate Toy Co., New York, NY in 1929. Woodhaven purchased Animate Toy (a company of 16 people) in 1934. They continued to produce toys designed by Animate Toy without any changes until 1939. In fact the design is more characteristic of 1920's styling than 1930's. The condition is outstanding; excellent+ with its original box. The box is also in high grade excellent condition. The tractor is all pressed steel with baked on enamel surfaces. The wheels, hood, and radiator are embossed. The driver (original) and underside are polished tin. It has a start/stop switch near the driver and is wound using the large, rear crank. It's powered by an external clockwork motor mounted on the front right axle. The narrow treads are solid rubber and original. The scraper is also painted pressed steel and original to the toy. It works great! The box is sturdy, narrow stock cardboard with attached hinged lid. It's printed blue on white on all panels with a three-quarter perspective view of the toy. The underside is blank. It comes with its original insert. As mentioned, identical versions of the tractor and box were manufactured by Woodhaven and Animate Toy Co. Fortunately the Woodhaven model is stamped with the manufacturer's name on the underside.
